Social media includes a wide variety of Internet services to enable people to connect with each other. The principal features of social media include social networking and social bookmarking sites. The key point in using social media is that you want to create friends and help them come to know, like and trust you. Serve first means provide value in what you post on the social networking and social media sites. Keep marketing low key or you will find that your connections (LinkedIn), followers (Twitter), friends (Facebook), and people who have you in their circles (Google+) will drop you.

This is a balancing act if you are a small business and want to use social media to promote your business. It comes back to making sure that you are contributing something of value first. One way to do this is to share other posts, comments and quotes that you found interesting, informative or fun. Think like you are engaging your friends when you use social media for your business. Will they hang around if you are only talking about your products and services or about yourself?
